Academy Award nominee Richard Dix (1893–1949) appeared in ninety-seven films between 1917 and 1947, including Cecil B. DeMille's silent epic The Ten Commandments (1923) and Cimarron (1931), which won the Oscar for Best Picture. Prášilova made this portrait soon after relocating to New York City from Munich.
