Enrolled in the Düsseldorf Academy at age twelve, Oswald Achenbach left two years later to enter the atelier of his brother Andreas, a prominent landscape painter known for his closely observed realism. Autumn Landscape displays Oswald's own penchant for the naturalism and interest in commonplace subject that characterize landscape of the Düsseldorf School in the mid-nineteenth century.
