Inscriptions & Markings

signature/maker's mark: Mounted, signed and dated by the photographer in pencil on the mount, the "Imogen Cunningham Trust, 862 Folsom Street, San Francisco" title label numbered "IC41" affixed to the reverse, circa 1920, probably printed and mounted in the 50's or 60's and signed in the 70's. This photograph bears a late signature and the label of the Trust. However, the print and mount appear to be earlier. This combination of a late signature on an earlier mounted print is not uncommon with in Cunningham's work, and simply reflects the fact that she frequently made and mounted prints during the same time period, but did not necessarily sign them, preferring to wait until they left her studio. Beth Gates Warren, Appraiser, Nov. 1999.
