Perhaps the most famous woman print artist in Japan, Shinoda combines both printing techniques and calligraphy in her works. In Wind from the Sea, two elements—the dense black mark and the greenish-black band, both slanting down to the right—were created with lithography. Shinoda hand-brushed the light, airy strokes in pale blue, black, and silver that sweep from the lower left to the upper right. Her free, fluid style is based on the tradition of loose "grass script" calligraphy and evokes the motion of wind on water.
