Description
Khorāsān, known as the Land of the Rising Sun, is one of the largest provinces in Iran and approximately corresponds to the boundaries of ancient Parthia. The region was an important component of the Achaemenid (5229-651 BCE) and Sāsānid (224-651 CE) empires. It was conquered by the Arabs in 651-652, and later by Ghenghis Khan in 1220, and still later by Timur (Tamerlane) in ca. 1383. The largely agricultural region contains many ethnic groups, and was the home of celebrated poet Omar Khayyam.
