In 1985, Cindy Sherman was commissioned by Vanity Fair magazine to illustrate fairy tales. She read Aesop’s fables, the Brothers Grimm, and various folktales in preparation, seeking out the most frightening among them. Working with masks, prostheses, and theatrical paint, she produced a series of richly colored and macabre images, using herself as the primary model. Currently Sherman is the focus of a major retrospective at New York’s Museum of Modern Art through June 11, 2012; a print of this photograph is featured in the exhibition.
