Description

This diminutive still life, Whistler's only foray into this genre, shows the artist's consummate skill in rendering the passage of light through glass. Using a delicately etched line, Whistler delineated the sparkling rim of the shallow coupe, the light passing through it, and the scalloped tray it rests on. The slightly asymmetrical placement of the wine glass gives the etching a dynamic quality.
