Description

Jan Mutulka emigrated to the Bronx, New York, from Czechoslovakia in 1907. He traveled to Paris after receiving a scholarship from the National Academy of Design in 1919, where he remained until 1927. In Paris, he was exposed to Cubism, which was to prove a lasting major influence on his work. Aqueduct in the Bronx, with its flattened planes and simplified geometric forms, was created during this Parisian period.
