Yousuf Karsh immigrated to Canada in 1925 after fleeing political and cultural strife in Turkey. He settled in Québec, where he worked in his uncle’s photography studio, and later apprenticed with a photographer in Boston. In 1931, he opened his own photography studio in Ottawa, Ontario, the capital of Canada, and quickly built a clientele of political figures. This photograph of Winston Churchill, which depicts the British Prime Minister as a steadfast wartime leader, garnered international acclaim and solidified Karsh’s position as a photographer of the world’s luminaries.
