Description

In the early 1980s, Lois Conner discovered the early-twentieth-century banquet camera, so named for the elongated rectangular format that made it possible to photograph large groups at dinner banquets. This unusual framework, reminiscent of traditional Chinese scroll paintings, prompted Conner to consider the landscape as a visual text meant to be experienced in sections over time rather than as a single view. Conner’s 7 x 17-inch photographs, created in China, are extended narratives that encourage a visual journey through and around each work.
