Many artists illustrated ancient texts that dealt with mythology. Early in the century, John Flaxman completed designs to complement writings by Hesiod dating to about 700 BCE. Flaxman's spare outlines, rendered in stipple engravng by William Blake, show both elegance and power, as in the dramatic scene depicting the epic battle of the Giants and the Titans.
