In the Studio: Reflections on Artistic Life

Artists have long been inspired by their immediate surroundings and tools—the studio, models, and materials of their craft—and often make them the subject of their work. Many printmakers mine this intimate world in order to reflect on the nature of art, art history, and the act of making prints, paintings, and sculpture. In the Studio: Reflections on Artistic Life examines this self-reflexive impulse and features intimate views of painters and models by Pablo Picasso and Philip Pearlstein, the pop brushstrokes of Roy Lichtenstein, parodies of exhibition visitors by Honoré Daumier and John Sloan, and sardonic homages to their artistic predecessors by Warrington Colescott and Red Grooms. Offering a wide variety of artists and media, In the Studio explores more than one hundred years of printmakers reflecting on their vocation and the rich history of artmaking.
