Description

Pater was a master of the fête galante, a theme consisting of scenes of elegant courting couples or actors, sometimes accompanied by musicians, in park settings. The subject was invented by Pater's teacher, Antoine Watteau (1648-1721), and became emblematic of the Rococo style.

Pater's interpretations of the Rococo are light and airy, distinguished by the delicacy of his brushwork. Le Baiser Rendu illustrates a scene from the French literary classic, the Fables of Jean de la Fontaine. It is one of a pair of courtship subjects; the other is titled Le Baiser Donné (The Kiss Bestowed), in the collection of Baron Maurice de Rothschild, Paris.
