The sculptor Ossip Zadkine was born in Russia and spent most of his adult life in Paris, but like many European artists he fled Europe for America during WWII. The influx of expatriate artists during both WWI and WWII had a profound influence on the arts in America as these painters and sculptors brought with them the latest modernist ideas and techniques. Here, the abstract elements of Zadkine’s work are built on Cubist principles, but the more naturalistic treatment of the eyes and mouth lends the sculpture an emotive power more characteristic of the work of the Expressionists.
