Description

Leonard Baskin paid tribute to his artistic predecessors in his series Etchings of Ten Favorite Artists, choosing men whose art had a personal resonance to him.

Although not nearly as famous today as his contemporaries Raphael, Leonardo, or Michelangelo, Andrea Mantegna was arguably the finest engraver of the Renaissance. Baskin uses a strict profile typical of early Renaissance portraiture, while imbuing the figure with a restless graphic dynamism that reflects Baskin's own style.
