Description

Leo Steppat was best known for his animal sculptures and his skills in portraiture. Born in Vienna, he earned a Master of Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Art in that city. A dedicated artist-educator, his teaching career included positions at American University in Washington D.C.; the University of Indiana; the University of Mississippi; and until his retirement in 1955, at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Horse is typical of Steppat’s mature works in its level of abstraction and stylistic echo of archaic Chinese forms.
