Description

Maggesi was born in Carrara, Italy, which is famous for its marble quarries. Around 1829, he settled in Bordeaux, where he served for many years as official sculptor of the city and director of a local school of sculpture. He routinely ordered marble from his place of birth.

Maggesi exhibited this bust, identified only as "Dr. A," in the Paris Salon of 1844. Carved on the plinth is the symbol of the medical profession, the rod of Asclepius, the Greek god of healing. On the right side, the bust is signed, dated and inscribed in Italian all’amicizia (to friendship). The noble presence and profound naturalism of the portrait are unusual for this period and reflect the sculptor's homage to the subject as both physician and friend.
