A powerful and passionate artist and teacher, Robert Henri inspired at least two generations of artists. On his second trip to France in the mid-1890s, the dark moody works of Edouard Manet and the artists who had inspired him—Diego Velázquez, Francisco Goya and Frans Hals—profoundly influenced him. Rue de Rennes was completed during this period, a time when Henri reveled in a limited palette of rich and liquid grays, blacks, and vivid reds. The painting's explosive energy exemplifies Henri's immediate and visceral response to the world around him.
